The Savoy Opera Chorale

The Savoy Opera Chorale performances vary from choral concerts to costumed and staged abridged versions of the Gilbert & Sullivan operas.  Our changing format is to keep our performances fresh, exciting and interesting for both singers and audiences alike by introducing unknown works or never-performed-in-Perth-before repertoire by both Sullivan and Gilbert as well as the G & S collaborations, to date Trial by Jury (2012), Patience (2014), The Sorcerer (2015), Thespis (2016) and recently The Grand Duke (June 2017).  We also performed Sullivan’s The Zoo (2013) and The Rose of Persia (2015).  Our concerts have included excerpts from Sullivan’s beautiful unfinished opera The Emerald Isle and some of his other solos and ensembles, opera choruses by well-known composers such as Verdi, sung in their original language, Fauré’s Cantique de Jean Racine (in French) and wonderful choral arrangements of popular songs such as You Raise Me Up, Over the Rainbow and one of our favourites, Simple Gifts, this year’s entry in the North of Perth Music Festival.

Following on from The Grand Duke, we are now rehearsing Princess Ida, another wonderful G & S opera that is not performed in Perth as much as the more popular Mikado, Pirates or Pinafore however, with its roots set deep in Alfred, Lord Tennyson’s blank verse poem The Princess, it makes for a very interesting and entertaining story line.  Of course, there are plenty of laughs and as usual, Sullivan’s music is beyond reproach.  Society Secretary and SOC member Margaret Jones has put her hand up to direct the opera.  She has many years of experience in directing, choreographing, performing, composing and organising theatre groups and has been a staunch G & S member for many years.  I have every confidence that this will be an amazing production under her expert guidance.

Performance dates as follows:  7:30pm Friday 13 October; 2:30pm Saturday 14 October and 2:30pm Sunday 15 October in the G & S Hall, Lemana Road Nollamara.  Booking details available soon but there will be door sales as usual.

It’s never too late to join the choir so if you are thinking about it, please feel free to come along to the G & S Hall any Tuesday night before rehearsal starts at 7:30 PM or contact Ian Ferguson on 0412 779 828 for more information.  No experience necessary, all welcome.
