Versatile actor Tracey Myhill compares the difference between performing in plays to musicals; who her favourite actor is; and the secret side to her tough guy character in Kiss Me, Kate.
With extensive experience in both plays and musicals in NSW, VIC, QLD and now WA, what differences have you observed between these two production types, and what has been your favourite role and/ or show so far?
In my experience, musicals by far, require a lot more preparation. The bringing together of the music / songs with the dialogue and movement can be a challenge. I have found that Directors with a good rehearsal structure and production planning, produce excellent theatre productions. I have loved all the characters that I have had the privilege to portray, that’s why I can’t pick a favourite. Being given the opportunity to perform in Ruddigore, last year, after such a long break from the theatre, was amazing.
The gangsters in Kiss Me, Kate are not your average enforcer thugs. What characteristics are you bringing to your role, and how are you approaching performing one of Cole Porter’s cleverest songs?
No, I’m not your average enforceable debt collector! I love a good joke and enjoy a good belly laugh. I’m also a big softy but don’t tell anyone as I might ruin my enforcer thug reputation. I’m approaching Mr Porter’s song like any other song I need to learn…practice, practice, practice!
Do you have any rituals that help you get into a good mindset before a performance?
I do have rituals and I really dislike being in a rush. The first one is that I must be at the theatre at least 2 hours before curtain-up. I usually get the basics of my costume on, then makeup, then the final components of my costume and then sit and chill, while going through lines in my head. For me, staying calm and focused is the key.
You have a keen interest and eye for detail in handicrafts. How did you discover this hobby and what do you enjoy the most about it?
It’s only been over the past few years that I discovered adult Lego, (Lego kits that are designed from adult builders) which got me thinking what other things can I build? After some internet searching, I found miniature dollhouses. They come in kit form, and you glue them together. The first miniature dollhouse I built was a three-story Japanese inspired house which took around 105hrs to build over 8 months. I love that I have to build everything from scratch and then when the house is complete, it is such a sense of accomplishment.

If I could go back in time, I’d have love to have met Alan Rickman! A most brilliant actor who was so highly underrated. From Hans Gruber to Judge Turpin to Professor Snape. I totally admire him and all the characters he portrayed.
